Abstract

Calophysus macropterus "Mota", has acquired over time a valuable commercial importance, for being a resource that enjoys a good appearance, meat with pleasant texture and good taste; becoming part of the daily consumption of the population as a source of animal protein; generating in the same way higher economic income to the entire marketing chain. This situation motivated us to carry out a diagnosis of the Mota fishery in the Peruvian Amazon, with the intention of describing the fishing gear used in the area, disembarkation volumes and main markets. Fifty-five interviews were conducted between December 2019 and November 2020; and 19 interviews were conducted from September to November 2020 with workers associated with their capture in the departments of Loreto and Ucayali, Peru during the hydrological periods of crescent and trough. It was found that hand fishing is the most widespread with a fishing operation that fluctuates between 5 to 7 days with catch volumes of around 300 - 500 kg, the use of fishing nets (skidders) was reported with a fishing operation between 15 - 20 days and catch volumes of 500 to more kg. The city of Pucallpa has a higher concentration of purchase and sale of fresh frozen Mota compared to Iquitos; the departments of Loreto and Ucayali have greater economic dynamics with similar economic returns in emptying and growing. Immediate attention by the fishing authorities is recommended, to generate an urgent regulation.
