Abstract
Sweet sorghum is important for production of bioethanol, which constitutes a renewable energy source, capable of substituting fossil fuels. The objective of the study was to estimate general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA), in parents and hybrids of sweet sorghums, to identify the best genotypes for bioethanol production. The experiment consisted of five lines, six testers and the 30 possible hybrids, planted under rainfed conditions, during the spring-summer 2017 cycle; at Las Huastecas Experimental Station (INIFAP) in a randomized complete block experimental design with three replicates. Combining ability was estimated using the line x tester method described by Kempthorne. Results showed that lines; Potranca and K.CollierA, and testers; 3-2-1 and 4-1-1 had highly significant values (P ≤ 0.01) of GCA for: °Brix, total plant weight, stem weight, juice weight and bioethanol production. This indicates the predominance of additive genes. The best hybrids for bioethanol production were: Potranca*2-1-2, K.CollierA*3-2-1, K.CollierA*4-1-1 and Potranca*4-1-1, they were highly significant (P ≤ 0.01) in SCA for bioethanol production; they were also the ones that presented the highest values.
