Abstract
Vachellia farnesiana (L.) Willd. is a thorny shrub that can grow up to 3 meters tall. It is commonly found in secondary vegetation derived from tropical deciduous forests, shrublands, oak forests, and grasslands. In Mexico, studies evaluating epiphytic lichen communities have primarily been conducted in temperate forests and on phorophytes such as Alnus and Quercus. In dry areas, records are scarce, and even more so on phorophytes of V. farnesiana; hence the importance of recognizing the associated epiphytic lichen community. To achieve this objective, a non-quantitative opportunistic sampling was conducted on 15 phorophytes where the presence of lichens was evident. A total of 10 families, 22 genera, and 49 species of lichenized fungi were recorded. Eight species are reported as new records for Oaxaca: Candelaria fibrosa, Candelariella vitellina, Lecanora fulvastra, Heterodermia diademata, Hyperphyscia syncolla, Phaeophyscia culbersonii, Physcia aipolia, and Ramalina aspera. The results indicate that V. farnesiana is a phorophyte capable of hosting a high richness of epiphytic lichens even in fragmented environments.
